What?! Butter & Oil in COFFEE?!

If you Google "Keto Coffee" you are bound to come up with a million and one websites trying to sell you the "Best" thing for your morning coffee.  I will say that the first time I ever heard of this was in fact Bulletproof Coffee

I had no clue what "BPC" or Bulletproof coffee even was, I just knew that it was something associated with a ketogenic diet and I needed to figure it out! I am on quite a few Ketogenic groups across all of social media. So i  posed some questions to the masses of people who had been practicing a #Ketolifestyle much longer that I had.

All I knew was that I was struggling to get 70%+ of my macros from fat on any given day.  I needed to know how they did it! So THIS is why most Ketoers drink a bulletproof coffee to start their day....FAT content!

There are also many health benefits quoted to have scientific evidence backing it, according to the Bulletproof website...

"Starting your day with cereal, granola, oatmeal, toast, fruit, or another carb-heavy breakfast staple spikes your blood sugar. You’ll get a quick burst of energy, but by mid-morning your blood sugar will crash, and you’ll be hungry, tired, and unfocused.

Starting your day with Bulletproof Coffee, on the other hand, gives you three things:

  • Suppressed hunger. Brain Octane Oil balances ghrelin and CCK, your hunger hormones, keeping you full until lunch. You can read more about the science behind BP Coffee and hunger suppression Here
  • Steady lasting energy. The saturated fat in grass-fed butter slows the absorption of caffeine, which gives you even energy for several hours instead of a caffeine spike and crash. No jitters, either.
  • Mental clarity. Brain Octane rapidly converts to Ketones, a type of molecule that your brain uses more efficiently than carbs or sugar. Pair ketones with the slowly releasing caffeine and you can literally feel your brain turning on.

Ditch the carb-heavy breakfast. Start your day with fat for fuel. You’ll be sharp and alert straight through until lunch."

Now, even thought BPC was the first I had heard of it I decided for a few weeks that I would try using MCT oil (Kiss my Keto) and Kerrygold (full fat butter) myself and see how I did. I can honestly say it was not near as bad and I THOUGHT it was going to be. I do recommend blending it in a nutribuller or some type of blender instead of hand stirring. You can also use Coconut Oil if you do not have MCT oil. Not all oils are created equally! if you're attempting to use an MCT try an unflavored one first.  If you cannot stand the thought of oil and butter in your coffee, or you try it and decide its NOT for you... Perfect Keto makes a few powders (i.e. Salted Caramel) that I personally love. I am unsure if you are getting the same "effects" that BPC website claims by utilizing these options instead, but I do know that it was MUCH easier to hit my macros, especially for Fat, by drinking these coffee drinks each morning.

If you're not a coffee person:

You can also mix with tea OR make a smoothie. Any type of nut milk (unsweetened) can be blended with ice, mct powder, vanilla extract, heavy cream, etc. to make a refreshing morning "frappe". I will make sure to post some non coffee drink options in the gallery as well.

I know it takes a little getting used to the thought of oil and butter and THAT much FAT... but I promise you, it is for a reason. You feel fuller longer, eat less throughout the day, and helps keep your body in Ketosis. You can also have a BPC while intermittent fasting and it will not break your fast.

I hope this helps and was a quick explanation!
